CNBLUE Talks Maroon 5 Comparisons & Defining Their Sound at Debut NYC Show
By Jeff Benjamin, N.Y. | January 24, 2014 8:40 PM EST
cnblue-billboard-650f.jpg

CNBLUE's Jungshin, Jonghyun, Yonghwa and Minhyuk
FNC Entertainment and Mnet America

The Korean rock band say their first solo U.S. show "is much more meaningful for us and for our fans."

CNBLUE has all the qualities of your typical K-pop boy band: Charismatic, good-looking and talent in singing, acting, rapping, playing instruments and beyond.

But the quartet is far from a boy band. Most often compared to acts like Maroon 5 and Jason Mraz, CNBLUE -- consisting of lead vocalist/guitarist Yonghwa, guitarist Jonghyun, drummer Minhyuk and bassist Jungshin -- is one of the few Korean rock bands that can compete with the idols on the K-Pop Hot 100. In fact, the guys earned their highest-charting entry yet on the K-Pop chart last February when their single "I'm Sorry" peaked at No. 2, spending five weeks inside the Top 10.

And their fans are just as dedicated as any boy band's.

For the first time ever, CNBLUE brought its show to the East Coast with a performance at New York's Best Buy Theater on Jan. 21. While the show was announced in December, no one could have predicted the fierce snowstorm would plague fans waiting in line from early hours of the morning to get the best spot in the general admission pit. The temperature refusing to rise above 14 degrees was a stat not lost on the band.

"We're really worried about our fans who have been waiting since the wee hours of the morning outside," Yonghwa, via translator, said to Billboard, the only media CNBLUE agreed to speak with before its New York debut. "We've dreamt of playing New York for a long time so we're glad that it's finally happening. Especially because it's our first concert of 2014, we want to really go out, even if we faint, we really just want to give it our all... but even if only one fan came, we still would have done the show."

And it's that humble, dedicated mindset that has taken CNBLUE so far in the K-pop scene.

Instead of being discovered by recruiters and trained by an entertainment agency, the members of CNBLUE sharpened their skills playing as street musicians in Japan and South Korea. Since its official 2009 debut, the group has steadily risen to be competitive with top Korean acts.

"Most of the K-pop groups are defined by dancing, showmanship and those kinds of things," Yonghwa added. "But because we're a band, we think it's a great quality that all our performances are done live."

Their unique qualities have transferred over to the Billboard charts. "Re:BLUE: CNBLUE 4th Mini Album" went to No. 1 on the World Albums chart in February andcharted on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, meaning an entry on the Billboard 200 wasn't far off. In fact, the guys chalk up their first American solo show to a result of their strong chart showing.

And they ROCKED the Pasadena Civic Auditorium last night!!!

The venue this time was not as grand as the one from March 2012 (Nokia Theatre), so we had to drive for an hour because LA has the worst traffic especially at Peak hours (normally would have taken us a half hour)

When we got there, fans were already starting to go inside the venue...I was really upset because they were not strict at all about having some camera, and I didn't bring mine because i read in the website it wasn't allowed, so to my dismay, i had to use my galaxy phone to take some clips of the group.

We still had a half hour to spare so they had this LifeSize pictures of YH&JH and MinHyuk and JS where we decided to fall in line to take my daughter's picture

then there were several people asking for donations for the CNBlue program of helping out the needy which is awesome
Then we found out they were selling some BLueMoon Tshirts and hoodies etc and there were like hundreds in line, my dtr wanted the TShirt so we fell in line...omo...it took us close to almost 8PM when we finally got a chance to get to buy a Shirt...(very nice I must say, it was only available in Medium, so my dtr had to get it even though it was big...i should have gotten the hoodie but it was really pricey)
We finally went in and sat on the loge (2nd floor) and was amazingly surprised that we seemed close to the stage...ke ke ke...
but of course everyone brought their cameras with them and here I am with my phone...booo hoo hoo....so i can't even zoom in and the videos I took the sound was TOO loud that when played it was crackling!!!

It started at 8PM and they came out at roughly 9 minutes past 8 because they were showing their usual CNBlue clip at the start and everyone was shouting due to their excitement...

YongHwa was wearing that army jacket over a redTshirt....and I'm happy to say, he was wearing RED SOCKS!!! ke ke ke...(and we all know that ShinHye's fave color is RED, right?)
He actually looked slimmer and not as buffed as I thought he would be, it looks like he's really really exhausted but didn't show it at all...
when it was around 949PM, they said they were going to sing one last song so everyone said OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.....

we of course knew that there has to be an Encore, so everyone was chanting CNBLUE...then they showed something on the Screen and everyone was immensely happy to see them come back to the stage...
and this time around they sang more of their HIT songs like: I'm a loner: Wetoriya, Hey You and yes, they sang the HeARTSTRINGS song to my dellulu delight...ke ke ke...

Sadly it had to end, they said their goodbyes and bowed to their audience and took a couple of pictures of their fans on stage....aigo....

it was soooooooooooooooo much fun and my daughter of course enjoyed this evening too and wished she bought the hoodie and the CNBlue towel...
YH was full of aegyo...he was dancing all night....

I'm trying to post some pictures but it keeps saying Entity too large....wheyo?

let's see if this one will fit, i changed the resolution on this:
