The Eun-Sang Hate is getting to me
I’m going to be very upfront and honest. Heirs is just cracktastic and silly enough I really enjoy live texting Audrey when I watch it. It took me a little bit to get caught up on episodes 5-8 because I was travelling so when I started hearing and seeing grumblings on tumblr about our Heroine, I figured I’d watch it and see how badly she was being written, because I loved her in the first four episodes.
I mean, she’s not Candy, she has flaws, and she’s trying so hard not to become a concubine the way Tan’s mother is. I have so much respect for what she’s trying to do—especially considering how Rachel takes everything out on her.
I got caught up a few days ago and after some thinking and mulling it over, I want to point out a few things because I felt like I was watching something very different than anyone else.
I mean, I saw someone claim that Eun-Sang was acting like she had a lobotomy.
Young-Do isn’t just a bully, he’s a monster. Audrey wrote an excellent post on this. You should go read it.
Eun-Sang is very aware of this. She may joke with Tan about Young-Do, she may point out that his bullying of her is all Tan’s fault, and when they’re alone, Eun-Sang is constantly telling him how much Young-Do threatens her.
And let’s be very, very clear, Young-Do is threatening her. If this were an adult show I would be very afraid he could rape her as part of his bullying. He’s made enough comments to Rachel that make me believe sexual assault is in his wheelhouse of horrible behaviors he’s willing to engage in—and get away with because he’s so freaking rich.
And when Eun-Sang is in public with Young-Do, with everyone’s eyes watching her, Eun-Sang is paralyzed with fear, because she’s seen what he’s done not only to the bullied kid, but to those he considers friends—like Bo Na.
Eun-Sang doesn’t have a lobotomy. She is trying to freaking survive with her mind and body intact. She shuts down because that’s what the body does with it’s threatened. The betrayal of this shutdown is so realistic that every time it happens, I’m super uncomfortable because I want her to freaking do something.
But that’s not how real life works. In real life, when we are threatened, especially women, we don’t run away or attack, we freeze, because that is the safest option.
The scene where she sits with Young-Do at the lunch table at the end of episode 8, she is visibly shaking and almost completely shut down. When Tan gets her outside, she is crying to the point of hysteria. (I’m not pleased with his attempt to stop her from answering the phone, but I’m waiting to see how it’s resolved before I decide if I want to dropkick Tan.)
And when her phone rings, not five minutes after Young-Do trips her, she is so hysterical that she screams that she has no choice but to answer the phone because if she doesn’t, she knows exactly what will happen to her.
This call is a threat. Young-Do knows it. Tan knows it. But more importantly, Eun-Sang knows it.
No amount of abuse Young-Do receives from his father is an acceptable excuse to treat her this way. Eun-Sang shouldn’t be forced to be understanding, kind, or compassionate to her tormentor just because he is all hot and conflicted.
The Young-Do/Eun-Sang shippers scare me because this is 100% the beginnings of an abusive relationship. It is not romantic at all.
(I’m also not pleased with what’s going on with Tan at this point either. But that’s an entirely separate post. As is my admiration for Woo Bin acting ability. He is downright menacing and terrifying and holy crap I’m impressed with his acting.)
My point is this—Eun-Sang isn’t weak or silly or stupid or lobotomized or any of the other hateful things I’ve seen about her. She’s been forced into an agonizing corner as she becomes Young-Do’s tool to punish and hurt Tan simply because she is the girl Tan likes. At this point, neither boy is taking her feelings into account—feelings she has made very clear to both of them.
I’m on Team Eun-Sang. If there is a way for her to end up Queen of Everything, I want it to happen. So, please stop hating on my girl. She doesn’t deserve it.
" HEIRS" ....... and to evEryone FIGHTING!!!
